Science Unit 4 Test: Earth's Systems: Water, Wind & Land
Name Date
Part 1: Land & Water Features
Use the map of Pine Island for questions 1 and 2.
Map of Pine Island
This map shows Pine Island from above. The key tells what each symbol means. A river starts on the mountain and ends in the lake.
Key: brown triangle = mountain, blue wavy line = river, blue oval = lake, green dot = tree. Ocean all around.
- On the map, what does the blue wavy line show?
- The river flows from the mountain into the lake. Why does the water flow that way?
- Circle the TWO places where water is found as a solid.glacierriverice cappond
- A class tossed a globe 20 times. A thumb landed on water 15 times and on land 5 times. What does this tell you about Earth?
Part 2: Erosion & Change
Think about how land changes, fast and slow.
| Hill | Spoons of sand washed to the bottom |
|---|---|
| Hill A: bare sand | 12 |
| Hill B: covered with grass clippings | 3 |
- Write F for a fast change or S for a slow change. ___ an earthquake cracks a road ___ a glacier scrapes out a valley ___ a volcano erupts ___ ocean waves wear a cliff down into sand
- Two sand hills got the same amount of water. Look at the table. Which hill lost more sand? How many more spoons?
- What does the hill test tell you about plants and erosion?
- How is weathering different from erosion?
Part 3: Weather & Water Cycle
Use the weather log and the pinwheel counts.
| Day | Sky | Wind | Rain? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | sunny | light | no |
| Tuesday | cloudy | strong | yes |
| Wednesday | cloudy | strong | yes |
| Thursday | sunny | none | no |
| Friday | sunny | light | no |
- How many days had rain? What was the wind like on those days?
- A pinwheel spun 30 times in an open field, 12 times behind a bush and 8 times next to a wall. Which spot was windiest? Why did it spin less next to the wall?
- It gets very cold and the water in a puddle freezes. Is it solid or liquid now? What will happen when the sun warms it?
- In spring, snow on a mountain melts. Where will the water go?
Part 4: CER Response
Read about Ella's test. Then answer with a claim, evidence and reasoning.
Ella's Wind Test
Ella made three piles of dry sand the same size. She blew on each pile through a straw for 10 seconds: one soft, one medium, one hard. Then she counted the spoons of sand that blew off the plate.
| How Ella blew | Spoons of sand blown off |
|---|---|
| soft | 1 |
| medium | 3 |
| hard | 6 |
- Does a stronger wind change the land more? Claim: My answer is ____. Evidence: The table shows ____. Reasoning: This is because ____.
