    Weekly Parent Digest

    Week 1

A 10-minute weekly routine that keeps you connected to what your child is learning.

    This week

Week 1 grounds your second grader in three-digit place value: hundreds, tens, and ones. It also launches reading and writers workshop. Short and long vowels anchor decoding while children sketch a personal narrative seed.

    Key vocabulary

    • hundreds
    • tens
    • ones
    • place value
    • narrative

    Parent tip

Build three-digit numbers with dollar bills (hundreds), dimes (tens), and pennies (ones) at the kitchen table.

What each subject is working on

    • Mathematics: Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones.
    • English Language Arts: Ask and answer questions about key details in a story (RL.2.1).
    • Science: Observe and classify objects by their properties (2-PS1-1).
    • Social Studies: Understand community rules and why they exist.

    This week in 30 seconds

Each Sunday, skim the upcoming week's headline: math focus, ELA theme, science unit, and the one social-studies idea.

    Three things to celebrate

Pick one moment your child surprised you, one moment they persisted, and one moment they helped a sibling, classmate, or you.

    One conversation starter per subject

Math: 'Show me one way to make 100.' ELA: 'Tell me about a character you met this week.' Science: 'What pattern did you notice in the weather?' Social: 'Who in our town did we learn about?'

    Two minutes of reflection

Friday: ask 'What was hard? What got easier?' Write the answer on the fridge — you'll be glad in June.
