Alaska: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Social studies: children sort savings goals into short-term and long-term goals.

      Partly covered

Week 28 teaches saving for a goal. Add a 10-minute sort that week: write 8 savings goals on cards (a sticker, a book, a bike, a trip) and sort them into 'soon' (short-term) and 'takes a long time' (long-term).

    • Social studies: children explore traditional ways people have made a living in their local region.

      Partly covered

Week 3 teaches community jobs and Week 19 compares life long ago and today. Add a 15-minute talk with a library book or a relative about traditional ways people in your region have made a living, such as fishing or hunting, and draw one of them.
