California: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Math: skip-counting by 2s is added to the Grade 2 counting standard.

      Covered

Covered in Weeks 17 and 18, where your child skip-counts by 2s during the odd and even lessons and the array warm-ups.

    • Math: children learn how units of time relate (for example, minutes in an hour, days in a month, weeks in a year).

      Partly covered

Week 23 teaches that the minute hand goes around once in 60 minutes. Add a 10-minute calendar talk that week: count the days in this month, the weeks in a year (52) and the months (12) on a wall calendar.

    • ELA: two writing standards that Common Core starts in Grade 3 begin in Grade 2 (writing that fits its purpose, and writing regularly over short and long periods).

      Covered

Covered by the daily Writing Workshop, which writes for different purposes (stories, opinions, facts) all year and in short and long pieces, with a review of writing across genres in Week 31.

    • ELA: children give and follow three- and four-step oral directions and plan a short spoken narrative presentation.

      Partly covered

Your child plans and presents spoken stories in Weeks 33 and 35. Add a 10-minute game of 'Three-Step Directions' twice a week: give 3- and then 4-step directions ('touch the door, clap twice, bring me a spoon'), then let your child give you some.
