Connecticut: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Social studies: children ask questions about a wide range of people and groups known for contributions to their community or the country; the standards suggest examples by name.

      Partly covered

Weeks 20 and 23 teach people remembered for their contributions (George Washington Carver, Ruby Bridges, Benjamin Franklin). Add one 15-minute session: pick a person from the Connecticut standard's suggested list, read a short biography and have your child write 2 questions about that person.

    • Social studies: children explain how scarcity and plenty shape community choices, such as budgeting.

      Covered

Covered in Week 29 (scarcity and choices with limited resources) and Week 31 (shopping with a limited budget).
