Georgia: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

    The state's own standards

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Science: children study stars of different sizes and brightness, and patterns of the sun and moon (national standards place sun and moon patterns in Grade 1).

      Add at home

Add a 2-week sky log (5 minutes a night): your child draws the moon's shape each night and notes how some stars look brighter than others. Add 10 minutes on a sunny day to mark where the sun is in the morning, at noon and in the late afternoon.

    • Science: pushes and pulls that change speed and direction are taught in Grade 2 (Kindergarten in the national standards).

      Add at home

Add a 15-minute ramp test: roll a toy car and push it gently, then harder, then tap it from the side, and have your child say how each push changed its speed or direction.

    • Science: life cycles of different living things are taught in Grade 2 (Grade 3 in the national standards).

      Covered

Covered in Week 31, where your child studies the life cycles of a frog, a butterfly and a bean plant.

    • Social studies: Georgia history, including people from Georgia's past and the Muscogee (Creek) and Cherokee peoples, plus Georgia's landforms.

      Partly covered

Week 21 teaches the Cherokee people today, and the My State add-on lessons cover state history and the state map. Add 15 minutes to learn about the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and Georgia landforms such as mountains and coast, using the map skills from Week 9.
