Indiana: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

    The state's own standards

Grade 2 (2023 standards) studies the local community: when it was founded, its celebrations and symbols, local government, maps of Indiana and the United States, and local goods and services. Indiana has posted 2026 revised standards; the date they take effect was not confirmed.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Grade 2 math adds measuring capacity with cups and pints (2.M.3).

      Add at home

Add a 15-minute kitchen activity: fill a pint container with cups of water and count how many cups fill it, then have your child guess and check which household containers hold more or less than a pint.

    • Grade 2 math adds how units of time relate (seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months) and elapsed time on the hour or half hour (2.M.4, 2.M.5).

      Partly covered

Week 23 teaches 60 minutes in an hour and elapsed time. Add a 10-minute calendar and timer talk: count 60 seconds together, then use a calendar to count days in a week, weeks in a month and months in a year.

    • Grade 2 ELA adds recognizing that media can inform, entertain and persuade (2.CC.7).

      Partly covered

Weeks 10 and 28 teach that authors write to inform, entertain or persuade. Add 10 minutes to sort media the same way: a weather report, a cartoon and a toy ad, and ask which purpose each has.

    • Grade 2 social studies (2023) names Indiana's Benjamin Harrison in the history of the Pledge of Allegiance (2.C.5).

      Partly covered

Week 18 teaches the Pledge of Allegiance phrase by phrase. Add 10 minutes that week to look up together how President Benjamin Harrison, from Indiana, is part of the pledge's history.
