Maryland: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

The state's own standards, informed by the C3 Framework

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Grade 2 math adds elapsed time to the hour and half hour (2.GR.C.8).

      Covered

Covered in Week 23, where your child solves elapsed-time problems by counting hours and half hours on a paper clock.

    • Grade 2 math adds line symmetry, which Common Core places in grade 4 (2.GR.B.6).

      Add at home

Add a 15-minute fold test: cut out paper shapes (a heart, a square, a circle, a letter A) and have your child fold each to find a line where both halves match, then draw that line of symmetry.

    • Grade 2 math adds problems with mixed coins and bills up to $20 (2.GR.C.9).

      Partly covered

Week 24 teaches coins and dollar bills. Add a 15-minute pretend store with play $1, $5 and $10 bills and coins, and have your child pay for items that add up to no more than $20.

    • Grade 2 social studies has students locate Maryland on maps and globes (2.2.1.a).

      Covered

Covered in Week 35 (locating home, town, state and country) and the My State, Part 1 add-on lesson (finding your state and capital on a map).
