Missouri: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

    Missouri's standards by subject

    Math

    Missouri Learning Standards: Mathematics

See the state's official pageAdopted 2016

Approved April 19, 2016. Written by Missouri work groups to replace Common Core. Some domain names differ (for example, Relationships and Algebraic Thinking), but we did not confirm how closely they follow Common Core, so basis is left blank.

    English Language Arts

See the state's official pageAdopted 2016

Approved April 19, 2016, with Missouri's own coding (for example, 2.R.1.A). The document does not mention Common Core, and we did not confirm the relationship, so basis is left blank.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Science: how an applied force or an object's mass changes its motion (2.PS2.A.1); the Next Generation Science Standards* place forces in Kindergarten and Grade 3.

      Add at home

Add a 15-minute test: roll an empty and a full water bottle down the same ramp and push each with the same small push, and have your child say which moves farther and why.

    • Science: how changes in vibration change sound (2.PS4.A.1); the Next Generation Science Standards* place sound in Grade 1.

      Add at home

Add a 15-minute sound test: stretch rubber bands over an open box and pluck them tight and loose, and have your child feel the vibration and say how the sound changes.

    • Social studies: early Missouri history, including Native American migration to Missouri, European exploration and settlement, and why enslaved Africans were brought to Missouri.

      Partly covered

Week 22 teaches explorers and settlers, and the My State, Part 2 add-on builds a state history timeline. Add 15 minutes with a library book or the state's website to put Native American migration, European exploration and settlement, and the enslavement of Africans in Missouri on that timeline, speaking plainly and respectfully about slavery.

    • ELA: with help, students are introduced to keyboarding skills as part of producing and publishing writing.

      Covered

Covered in Week 20, where your child types and saves a piece of writing with your help.
