Montana: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

Revised 2020-21, with Indian Education for All built in. Grade 2 covers community helpers and government (including tribal communities), goods and services, maps, and how people lived in the past. OPI's revision documents refer to the C3 Framework as used to create the standards.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Math: word problems and data standards should use cultural context about Montana Indigenous Peoples and local communities (MT.2.OA.1, MT.2.MD.5, MT.2.MD.9, MT.2.MD.10).

      Add at home

Once a week, rewrite 2 of the week's math word problems or survey questions using facts about a Montana tribe or your community from a trusted source, such as the Montana Office of Public Instruction's Indian Education materials.

    • Social studies: know that there are twelve distinct tribes in Montana whose people contribute to modern life (SS.H.2.2).

      Partly covered

Week 21 teaches Native nations that live today, and the My State, Part 2 add-on asks which nations live in your state. Add 15 minutes to list Montana's twelve tribes and learn one way people from one tribe contribute to life today.

    • Social studies: identify American Indian reservations on maps and use American Indian oral histories as historical sources (SS.G.2.1, SS.H.2.3).

      Partly covered

Week 21 labels nations on a map. Add 15 minutes to find Montana's reservations on a state map, and listen to or read one oral history from a tribal or library source, talking about how it teaches about the past.
