New Mexico: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

    New Mexico's standards by subject

    Math

Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (New Mexico rule 6.29.14 NMAC)

Uses the Common Core State StandardsAdopted 2010

New Mexico adopts the Common Core math standards by reference, so Grade 2 math is the same as the national standards.

    English Language Arts

Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, plus New Mexico-specific standards (6.29.13 NMAC)

Uses the Common Core State StandardsAdopted 2010

New Mexico added about 15% of its own ELA standards focused on culture and identity; the state says these extra standards are not tested.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • ELA (New Mexico addition): Grade 2 children use literature and media to learn about people, cultures and societies and to explore their own identity.

      Covered

Covered in Week 18 (folktales from other cultures) and Week 32 (culture and traditions, including a quilt square about your own family).

    • ELA (New Mexico addition): children in K to 2 use letter formation, lines and spaces to write a readable page. Common Core's handwriting standards end in Grade 1.

      Partly covered

Your child makes neat final copies each week in Publishing (for example Weeks 3, 4 and 8). Add 10 minutes of print practice twice a week, checking letter shapes, letters that sit on the line and finger spaces.

    • Social studies: Grade 2 includes personal finance, such as naming jobs in the community, setting money priorities, and sorting short-term and long-term financial goals.

      Partly covered

Week 3 teaches community jobs, Week 28 saving for a goal, and Week 29 making choices. Add a 10-minute sort of savings goals into short-term and long-term, and a talk about which goal comes first.
