New York: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Math: telling time adds the everyday terms quarter past, half past and quarter to (NY-2.MD.7).

      Partly covered

Week 23 teaches times such as 1:15, 2:30 and 9:45. Add 5 minutes a day that week saying those times as 'quarter past,' 'half past' and 'quarter to.'

    • Math: money problems stay within one dollar using the cent sign; New York waits until Grade 4 for decimals and the dollar sign (NY-2.MD.8). Common Core Grade 2 also includes dollar bills and the $ sign.

      Covered

Covered in Week 24, which teaches coins and the cent sign. For New York, focus on the cents problems within one dollar; the dollar-sign problems are extra.

    • Math: the Grade 2 shape standard is sorting flat shapes into polygons and non-polygons (NY-2.G.1), in place of Common Core's standard on drawing shapes with given attributes.

      Partly covered

Week 27 names shapes by sides and vertices. Add a 10-minute sort of drawn shapes into polygons (closed, with straight sides) and non-polygons (circles, open shapes, shapes with curves).
