Ohio: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

Based on the national science framework, with the state's own changesAdopted 2018

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Science: Grade 2 covers forces and motion, which the Next Generation Science Standards* place in Kindergarten and Grade 3.

      Add at home

Add a 15-minute test: push a toy car gently and then harder, then block its path, and have your child say how each push or pull changed its motion.

    • Science: Grade 2 covers the air around Earth and how uneven heating by the sun changes weather, topics the Next Generation Science Standards* place in Kindergarten and Grade 3.

      Partly covered

Week 23 teaches wind as moving air. Add 10 minutes to put one thermometer (or a cup of water) in the sun and one in the shade, and compare them to see how the sun heats places unevenly.

    • Math: money word problems use dollars with dollars or cents with cents, never both together, and no decimals (2.MD.8).

      Covered

Covered in Week 24. For Ohio, keep the dollar problems and the cent problems separate, and skip writing amounts like $1.00.

    • ELA (revised standards, full use from 2027-28): Grade 2 handwriting in manuscript and/or cursive (WF.2.1).

      Partly covered

Your child practices manuscript in the neat final copies made each week in Publishing (for example Weeks 3, 4 and 8). If you choose cursive, add 10 minutes of cursive practice 3 times a week from Week 19, starting with the lowercase letters c, a, d and g, then joining them into short words like cat and dad.
