Oklahoma: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

    Oklahoma's standards by subject

    Math

Oklahoma Academic Standards for Mathematics (OAS-M, 2022)

    The state's own standardsAdopted 2022

Oklahoma writes its own standards (it left Common Core in 2014). Strands: Number and Operations, Algebraic Reasoning and Algebra, Geometry and Measurement, Data and Probability. Tested since spring 2024.

    English Language Arts

Oklahoma Academic Standards for English Language Arts (2021)

    The state's own standardsAdopted 2021

Oklahoma's own ELA standards, tested since spring 2024; they include research and multimodal literacy strands at every grade.

    Science

Oklahoma Academic Standards for Science (OAS-S)

Based on the national science framework, with the state's own changes

The state lists both the 2020 standards and an updated 2026 version; the exact year the update took effect was not confirmed. Grade 2 expectations follow the same list as the Next Generation Science Standards* Grade 2.

    Social Studies

Oklahoma Academic Standards for Social Studies (2026)

    The state's own standards

The state lists the 2026 standards as current, but check timing: the 2025 standards were struck down by the Oklahoma Supreme Court, and the 2026 set was approved by the State Board in March 2026. Grade 2 covers civics, history, geography and economics, including local, state, national and Tribal governments.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Math: tell time to the quarter hour (2.GM.3.2). Common Core Grade 2 asks for the nearest five minutes.

      Covered

Covered in Week 23, where your child reads and sets times such as 1:15, 2:30 and 9:45.

    • Math: extend increasing and decreasing number patterns (2.A.1.1). Common Core has no Grade 2 pattern standard.

      Partly covered

Week 4 finds skip-counting patterns and Week 10 counts back by 10s. Add a 10-minute game: write patterns such as 5, 8, 11, __ and 50, 45, 40, __ and have your child extend each and say the rule.

    • Math: fair sharing into halves, thirds and fourths using length, set and area models (2.N.3.2). Common Core Grade 2 only splits shapes.

      Partly covered

Week 29 shares shapes, a paper strip and food into halves, thirds and fourths. Add a 10-minute set model: share 12 beans fairly between 2, 3 and 4 people.

    • ELA: find similes, alliteration and onomatopoeia (2.3.R.4). Common Core introduces similes in Grade 4.

      Partly covered

Week 13 teaches alliteration in poems. Add 10 minutes to find similes ('as fast as a cheetah') and sound words such as buzz and pop in a picture book.
