South Carolina: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Science: design solutions to human impacts on natural resources in the local environment (2-ESS3-1). The Next Generation Science Standards* cover this in Kindergarten and Grade 5.

      Covered

Covered in Week 28, where your child designs a device to keep litter or oil out of a model pond, and Week 11, which plans a way to conserve a natural resource.

    • Math: make a one-step adding or subtracting rule for number patterns within 100. Common Core starts number-pattern work in Grade 3.

      Partly covered

Week 4 finds skip-counting patterns and Week 10 adds and subtracts 10. Add a 10-minute 'What's My Rule?' game: you say 3 numbers in a pattern (12, 15, 18) and your child names the rule (add 3) and the next number.

    • Social studies: Grade 2 includes budgeting, wants and needs, income, saving and spending.

      Covered

Covered in Week 25 (needs and wants), Week 28 (saving, spending and earning money for work) and Week 31 (a limited budget).
