Texas: Second Grade and your state's standards

Second Grade is built on the national frameworks that most state standards are based on or closely resemble: the Common Core State Standards for math and English language arts, the national K-12 science framework (the Next Generation Science Standards*), and the C3 Framework for social studies. Every lesson lists the standard it teaches.

    Texas's standards by subject

    Math

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Mathematics

    The state's own standardsAdopted 2012

The elementary math TEKS (19 TAC Chapter 111) were adopted in 2012. Grade 2 has its own strand on personal financial literacy.

    The state's own standards

Grade 2 is a study of the local community and how important people and events shaped the community, the state and the nation (19 TAC 113.13, adopted 2010 and last amended effective 2024). New K-12 social studies TEKS were approved in June 2026, and grades K-5 start them in 2030-31.

Grade 2 topics your state adds or places differently

    • Math: a personal financial literacy strand (TEKS 2.11). Children learn how savings grow, deposits and withdrawals, responsible borrowing, lending, and producers and consumers.

      Partly covered

Week 28 teaches saving, what a bank does and interest, and Week 27 teaches producers and consumers. Add a 15-minute pretend bank: keep a record of deposits and withdrawals, and talk about borrowing and paying back.

    • ELA: Grade 2 includes forming all cursive letters. Common Core has no cursive standard.

      Add at home

Add 10 minutes of cursive practice 3 times a week from Week 19, starting with the lowercase letters c, a, d and g, then joining them into short words like cat and dad. Keep going until all upper- and lowercase letters are formed.

    • Social studies: children say both the Pledge of Allegiance and the Pledge to the Texas Flag and learn about named figures such as Irma Rangel.

      Partly covered

Week 18 teaches the Pledge of Allegiance. Add 10 minutes to say the Pledge to the Texas Flag and talk about what it means, and choose Irma Rangel as the person in the My State, Part 2 add-on lesson.

    • Science: Grade 2 covers weather observation, the Sun and Moon, and animal life cycles including metamorphosis. The Next Generation Science Standards* place weather in Kindergarten, the Sun and Moon in Grade 1 and life cycles in Grade 3.

      Partly covered

Week 23 covers weather observation and Week 31 life cycles, including a butterfly. Add a 2-week moon log (5 minutes a night) and mark where the sun is at three times on one sunny day.
