    Wes and the Green Gate

    Gran had an old gate by her garden. The paint was gray and peeling. "Can I help paint it?" asked Wes. Gran smiled. "Yes. We can paint it green." First, they got a can of green paint and two brushes. Wes painted fast. Drip, drip! Green paint fell on Gran's white roses. Wes felt his face get hot. He wanted to run and hide. Then Wes stopped. "Gran, I made a mess," he said. "I am sorry." Gran looked at the roses. "Paint can come off," she said. "We can get a pail and a rag." They cleaned each rose. Then Wes painted again, slow and neat. At the end of the day, the gate was green and clean. Wes stepped back and grinned. "Next time, I will go slow from the start," he said.
