ELA Unit 4 Test: Advanced Reading & Writing Workshop
Part 1: Complex Text Reading
Read both texts. If a sentence is hard, reread it slowly. Then answer the questions.
Two Texts
Text 1: The Snowshoe Hare The snowshoe hare lives in cold forests in the north. In summer, its fur is brown, like the dirt and dead leaves on the ground. As the days get shorter in fall, the hare begins to molt. Its brown fur falls out, and white fur grows in its place. By winter, the hare is white, like the snow. A hungry fox or lynx has a hard time seeing it. A lynx is a wild cat that hunts snowshoe hares. If a lynx comes near, the hare can sprint away at top speed. Its big back feet are covered in thick fur. They work like snowshoes, so the hare can run on top of deep snow without sinking. Text 2: The Missing Book Felix had a library book about volcanoes. It was due on Friday. On Thursday night, he looked for it on his shelf. It was not there. He looked under his bed and in his backpack. No book. Felix's stomach felt tight. "The librarian will be upset," he thought. He did not want to tell anyone, so he went to bed without a word. In the morning, Felix told his mom. "I lost my library book," he said quietly. "I should have told you last night." "Let's look together," Mom said. They found the book in his little sister's toy box! She had been looking at the pictures of lava. Felix hugged the book and laughed. "Next time, I will ask for help right away," he said.
