ELA Unit 4 Test: Advanced Reading & Writing Workshop
Directions for the grown-up
You may read the directions for every section aloud. In Complex Text Reading, you may read the questions aloud, but not the two texts: your child reads them on their own and may reread as often as they like. In Revision & Editing and Vocabulary, read only the directions. Do not read the sentences in the items. For the Writing Portfolio, have your child's writing folder ready before the test. You may sit beside your child for that section, as in a writing conference, but do not make changes for them. If you have a computer or tablet, your child may type the final copy with your help.

Scoring: Each item is worth 2 points. Items with two parts get 1 point for each part. The fix-it words come from Weeks 19 (capitals and CUPS), 21 (irregular plurals and past tense) and 22 (reflexive pronouns). The last two items use the ARMS moves from Week 19: Remove and Substitute plus Add.
Part 3: Writing Portfolio (12 points)
- Pick one piece you wrote this year. Read it out loud. Use ARMS to revise it: add a detail, remove a part that does not belong, move a sentence or swap a word. Make at least two changes. Then use CUPS to edit: capitals, usage, punctuation and spelling. Last, make a clean final copy. Type it with your grown-up if you can.Answer: Rubric (12 points): Revision (4): 4 = two or more ARMS changes that make the piece clearer or more interesting; 2 = one change that helps; 0 = no changes. Editing (4): 4 = the final copy fixes almost all capital, end mark and taught-spelling errors from the draft; 2 = some are fixed; 0 = none. Final copy (4): 4 = a complete, clean copy that someone else can read, typed with adult help or neatly handwritten, with a title; 2 = a copy that is started but not finished or hard to read; 0 = no final copy. Typing is not required for full points if no device is available. · 12 points
