What the standard actually says
Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.
Domain: Engineering Design — Using the engineering design process to solve problems — ask, imagine, plan, create, test, improve.
Next Generation Science Standards*Examples and home activities
- Ask: 'What's a problem you notice at home or school? How could you fix it?'
- Design a better backpack, lunchbox, or pet feeder together!

Name: ______________________ Date: ____________ Standard: K-2-ETS1-1
1. What did you observe? Draw it.
2. Write one question you want to investigate.
3. What do you predict will happen? Why?
4. Record your data in a simple chart.
5. What did you find out?
6. What would you change if you tried again?

Lessons that teach this
18 lessons list K-2-ETS1-1.
Week 1
- Wednesday · Science — Describe materials by observable properties; plan a test (2-PS1-1).
Week 13
- Monday · Science — Students will explain what engineers do and use a simple problem to identify a need that a design could solve (K-2-ETS1-1).
- Wednesday · Science — Students will observe that a design has limits (a budget of materials) and use a test to decide whether it solved the problem (K-2-ETS1-1).
- Friday · Science — Students will define engineering in their own words and connect the design process to problems people face every day (K-2-ETS1-1).
Week 14
- Monday · Science — Students will ask questions and make observations to define a simple problem that people want to change (K-2-ETS1-1).
- Wednesday · Science — Students will gather information about a problem by interviewing people and testing the situation, then list the criteria a good solution must meet (K-2-ETS1-1).
- Friday · Science — Students will present a clearly defined problem, criteria, and constraints in words and drawings (K-2-ETS1-1).
Week 18
- Monday · Science — Students will retrace every step of the engineering design process using their own project as the example (K-2-ETS1-1, K-2-ETS1-2, K-2-ETS1-3).
- Friday · Science — Students will present their engineering project to an audience, answer questions using evidence, and reflect on the whole unit (K-2-ETS1-1, K-2-ETS1-2, K-2-ETS1-3).
Week 28
- Monday · Science — Students will identify what a habitat provides (food, water, shelter, space) and observe how removing one part affects the living things there (2-LS4-1, K-2-ETS1-1).
- Wednesday · Science — Students will design and test a simple device that keeps litter or oil out of the model pond (K-2-ETS1-1, 2-LS4-1).
- Friday · Science — Students will conclude that habitats can be protected by people who name the problem and design solutions, and create a habitat protection sign (2-LS4-1, K-2-ETS1-1).
Week 33
- Monday · Science — Students will explain what makes a question testable and choose a science fair question from a menu of safe, measurable investigations (K-2-ETS1-1).
- Wednesday · Science — Students will write a prediction and identify what to change and what to keep the same in their science fair test (K-2-ETS1-1).
- Friday · Science — Students will gather materials, draw the experiment setup, and run one practice trial to check that the measurement works (K-2-ETS1-1).
Week 36
- Monday · Science — Students will review the year's science units by sorting portfolio work into topics and choosing their best piece from each (2-PS1-1, 2-LS2-1, 2-LS4-1, 2-ESS2-1, K-2-ETS1-1).
- Wednesday · Science — Students will write a caption for each portfolio piece explaining the science idea it shows and the evidence behind it (all Grade 2 science standards reviewed).
- Friday · Science — Students will present their science portfolio, reflect on their growth as a scientist, and receive awards tied to real skills demonstrated during the year (all Grade 2 science standards reviewed).
